About the New Practitioner Committee Mentorship Program

The NYSCHP New Practitioner Committee mentorship program aims to pair new pharmacy practitioners with experienced pharmacists who offer support and guidance in professional development.

Program Mission

Program Goals

  • Cultivate connections and interactions among pharmacists at different career stages
  • Provide mutual support and foster the growth of new practitioners in the pharmacy profession
  • Promote a collaborative, team-oriented approach to unify the profession
  •  Match mentors with at least 5 years of experience in their current practice area with new practitioners who have less than 5 years of experience
  • Help new practitioners identify potential challenges in the profession and develop strategies to address them
  • Offer mentorship resources to enhance the experience for both mentors and mentees

Program Overview and Timeline

Mentor and mentee enrollment:

  • All participants must be members of NYSCHP.
  • Enrollment details for mentors and mentees are shared separately via email by the NYSCHP office and take place annually, typically from December to February.
  • Mentors are recruited first, followed by mentees, with the number of mentees determined by the availability of mentors.

Mentor and mentee pairing and introductions:

  • Pairing will be conducted by the committee based on shared professional interests, as indicated on the interest forms, and finalized by the spring
  • The committee will introduce the mentor and mentee via email, providing an overview of the common interests that guided the pairing process.
  • An introductory webinar will be held shortly after pairing to orient participants to the program, establish expectations for professional boundaries, and discuss meeting frequency.

Mentor and mentee follow-up:

  • The committee will follow up with mentors and mentees approximately four times during the year following the matching process. These follow-ups may include:
    • Guidance on building successful mentorship relationships
    • Articles to inspire meaningful discussions
    • Information about group-based mentorship webinars
    • Invitations to share “success stories” from the professional relationships
    • Requests for feedback on the program and suggestions for improvement
